Boletus zelleri Murr. Cap 5-12cm across, convex; blackish to fuscous brown with olive tints, cuticle sometimes cracking to reveal reddish flesh beneath; smooth or quite rugulose-wrinkled, often velvety. Tubes yellow. Pores yellow, blueing when bruised. Stem 50-100 x 7-20mm equal; yellow overlaid with a reddish flush, becoming dull olive with age; dry, pruinose-punctate. Flesh yellow, slightly blueing when bruised. Odor pleasant. Taste pleasant. Spores spindle-shaped to ellipsoid, 12-15 x 4-5.5µ. Deposit olive-brown. Habitat under mixed trees, especially conifers. Found in the Pacific Northwest. Season August-November. Edible. |
